De-Cluttered home/ De-Cluttered mind: How to lovingly face that pile that scares you to transform your life?

Image
Recently I had a support session with someone who had a large amount of clutter in their bedroom. They also struggled with intimacy. Thru telehealth counseling sessions, we were able to physically venture together to their bedroom. I encouraged X to pick up one item off of the floor. X identified the first item and the memory attached to it. The relationship of that pant item on the floor to the person had a memory that wanted to stay buried. Putting the pants into closet meant that that lingering memory had no more power. X  wasn't triggered every time she stepped over it. It meant that the relationship to body, body image, romance, self, and other would shift. That is one of countless stories, and that person is certainly not alone. This is a common struggle we all face from time to time- a cluttered home and cluttered mind. By the end of session 4, items were removed from the ground. I guided X on creating a pain to power check list which highlighted what needed to b...

Center for Autism and the Developing Brain: On Tour!

Image
Today I took a tour of the Center for Autism and the Developing Brain, in White Plains, NY. It is housed at New York Presbyterian Hospital- Westchester Division. Open for two months, and it is already booming with cutting edge research and collaborations to meet high community needs. Here are pictures of the state-of-the-art facility. This tour was indeed an awesome training on how to create patient centered medical architectural models, amongst other things, for my developing brain as a practitioner and practical visionary.* A picture is worth a thousand words. I'm happy to share this tour- speaking volumes, now with you. For more information on the Center for Autism and the Developing Brain, and/or specifically on Autism, please see the links below: Center for Autism and the Developing Brain Autism Speaks Website * Disclaimer: This post is not an endorsement of the Center for Autism and the Developing Brain nor for Autism Speaks, and more so shares professional opinion...

Empathy: The Human Connection to Patient Care- Watch me.

Image
My former supervisor shared this you tube video with our Hospital team.* Watch this video: Empathy: The Human Connection to Patient Care This video is truly a reminder that fostering the soul care in health care , specifically practitioners showing empathy and compassion, can go a long way for how we as practitioners and as service recipients approach giving and receiving care. I believe, it reminds us to walk a day in our "clients" shoes, and bottom line, treat others with the care and professionalism that we all deserve. I am not always perfect at showing up at my 100% best as a practitioner or as a client. My emotions, like many others, at times get the best of me. I stub my toe, somebody insults my family member, I get a scary call, and my mood changes, paints my day differently. My experience changes the minute that the negative thought enters my consciousness. But God... invites in ease in a simple a moment, as taking in a breath. And when I remember that, I res...

Chimamanda Adichie: The danger of a single story (Thoughts as a Visiting Artist)

Today I visited Evan Hastings thoughtful and heart warming class of young adults, as a visiting Theater artist and youth developer. In Evan Hastings class, "Ramayana Remix" we watched a TED talk on "the danger of a single story" by the prolific Nigerian Novelist Chimamanda Adichie. Evan Hastings used her questions of the danger of a single story to explore the Ramayana with his students, alongside exploring how stereotypes are formed. I had the opportunity to jump in head first into the young adults libratory theater process and in that explore my own. Having very little experience with the Ramayana, forced me to both ask and answer questions of myself that expanded my box of what I assumed Bangalore and the Ramayana to be about before I arrived. Watching this TED talk had me ask the question today, "where in my life lies a single story?" According to Adichie in the TED talk, "stories can break the dignity of a people and they can also r...
