Let's Stand in solidarity with descendents of Comfort Women

Image
http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-202_162-57584343/japan-mayor-says-comfort-women-wwii-forced-prostitutes-were-necessary-to-maintain-discipline/ In the UK news: Japan's Mayor's comments of known human rights violations, the rape and forced prostitution of women (South Korean etc.) in WWII was necessary for the military to release their stress and maintain order in society. I am so disgusted with men seeing women's bodies as disposable versus sites of the divine. Just when I thought we were making steps forward in the movement to end the justification of gender violence, I find some Int'al politician takes us steps back. Sending empathy and solidarity energy to the descendents of comfort women today. In solidarity, Sis. Body Map- Chapati Style :D

Image
Location: Parissini, Kerala, South India Intention: Self Love Body Mapping; Group closing Today was the last day of our 3 week series with these dynamic resilient group of predominantly young  women at St. Mary's Special School. Today we played drama therapy body check in games, bringing these beautiful young people back in touch with their voices and bodies. We mixed it up with a game of steal the bacon and I watched introverted types become competitive and in your face spicy:D lol! So glad to be one of the witnesses! After numerous therapeutic and this (and other) team building warm ups we closed with body maps where they were instructed to lie on oak tag paper, each assigned to an adult to (with safe touch and permission) to outline their bodies. After this, the young people they were given markers and crayons to go to town, filling in what their bodies mean to them.  I wondered then, when was the last time someone had talked with them about their bodies...

Ayurveda Medical College- Life and death.

Image
Location:  Parassini  Kadavu  Ayurveda medical College  Kannur Intention: Ayurveda class tours Cadaver room Dr. George, recent graduate of the Ayurveda College, gives us a tour of the Cadaver room at the Parissini Kadavu Ayurveda College. This particular clip is of the skull. So much happens in this portion of the brain that we are unaware of and as an emerging Holistic Psychologist I found being able to see the interior fascinating. Yet, science today is just beginning to verify with experimentation, what Ayurveda doctors have known for over 5,000 years about the brain, other body structures, tissues, bones, mind, and/or the soul. In Hindu Mythology, God Shiva, destroyer and protector, passed down Ayurveda medicine to his people (one with Goddess Parvati), and ancients remembered it. It had been around far before it was remembered. Which means there is much to be learned and possibly much more to tap into and remember from ancient teachings today. ...

Young women find light in dark corners (Kerala, India)

Image
Today, I am working with Field Service Learning India in Kerala, India. I am working alongside 18 other volunteers of varying experience with young people, from all over the world. The video below is a brief introduction to some of the young people that 5 of the 19 (including myself) volunteers have been working with. With varying numbers of 12-40 youth-The task is beautiful yet daunting. These young children (and some old in age) are labeled special needs children and mostly are young women who have been orphaned as well. After completing an activity with them today I am brought to tears at the ways both that love, being present, and a hug can teach just as much as team building and drama therapy activities do. I am both honored to work alongside and co-lead this team and to be allowed in the hearts of these sweet and many developmentally challenged young women. Today my moment of joy was when 2 young women began to take over the musical chorus activ...

Gandhian Handloom symbol Meets Self-determination in Bk

Image
Location: Kerala India Intention: Self determination With whom: Cultural immersion trip with FSL India on the heels of Indian Independence Day! Today I would like to welcome you virtually to the Handloom Factory in Kerala, India. This is where various fabrics and traditonal Southern Indian clothes and house-ware are created by hand and on traditional machines by mostly women. The traditition of handloom has been around for many years. To the best of my knowledge and additional research, Gandhi promoted it as a form of autonomy from the British and a form of active resistence to not depending on the British goods. From the 1700's to Gandhi's passing in the 1900's, it became a symbol of patriotism and freedom. See the following website for additional general information on this act of resitence: http://www.cottontown.org/page.cfm?pageid=2786&language=eng Today, after seeing both the hard work of the workers and the semi poor working conditions I am left wit...
