Today I took a tour of the Center for Autism and the Developing Brain, in White Plains, NY. It is housed at New York Presbyterian Hospital- Westchester Division. Open for two months, and it is already booming with cutting edge research and collaborations to meet high community needs. Here are pictures of the state-of-the-art facility. This tour was indeed an awesome training on how to create patient centered medical architectural models, amongst other things, for my developing brain as a practitioner and practical visionary.* A picture is worth a thousand words. My former supervisor shared this you tube video with our Hospital team.* Watch this video: Empathy: The Human Connection to Patient Care This video is truly a reminder that fostering the soul care in health care , specifically practitioners showing empathy and compassion, can go a long way for how we as practitioners and as service recipients approach giving and receiving care. I believe, it reminds us to walk a day in our "clients" shoes, and bottom line, treat others with the care and professionalism that we all deserve. I am not always perfect at showing up at my 100% best as a practitioner or as a client. My emotions, like many others, at times get the best of me. I stub my toe, somebody insults my family member, I get a scary call, and my mood changes, paints my day differently. Story 2: A Woman's Hope? Goddess rising...* * This is written in honor of a special woman on the unit who co-created this with me,  before she was discharged. Blessings on your journey, your seeds help bless others. I lead a group on the women’s unit called “A woman’s hope?” The unit team mentioned to me that a number of women are struggling with suicidal ideation. They are having a hard time with finding their sense of grounded-ness, their sense of hope. I decide to title the group, “A woman’s hope?” in order to create a space that is open and welcoming to feelings of hope and spaces of hopelessness. I bring my Indian gong and we start the group with a silent meditation. We then follow with reading the poem “And still I rise” by Maya Angelou. Literally as the poem is being read, women begin to sob. Lines about "did you want to see me broken. Bowed head and lowered eyes...?" resonate, seen in the eyes of many women. I am pleased to announce that I graduated with my Masters Degree in Holistic Psychology; was commissioned as a GLBT Faith Leader of African Descent; and I received a grade of Distinction on my thesis from Dr. Cornell West and Dr. Harry Fogarty, the highest grade one can receive, all in May 2013. The title of my thesis was: Exploited Intimacy: The Souls of Black Women and the Folk who love them. I am also pleased to announce that I have been accepted into the New York Presbyterian- Mental Health Hospital CPE residency program, beginning May 26th - August 17, 2013, as an interfaith hospital chaplain/ Psycho-spiritual intern.
