How visionary leadership dramatically transforms graduates from break-down to breakthrough? [Based on a true story]

How visionary leadership dramatically transforms graduates from  break-down to breakthrough? Based on a true story  by Sacred Walker Founding CEO of Kuumba Health LLC Student Wellness and Leadership Initiative      She slumped down in the chair in front of us, her care team. Her facial expression and body language was clear: "I do not want to be here, I do not belong here, and I do not want to talk with any of you." We, her chaplain, social worker, nurse, and lead psychiatrist sat in a circle of chairs for her interview and welcome to the women's in patient unit. She answered slowly under her breath and the mutterings spilled out of her mouth like crumbs of a bread half eaten and a life unfinished. Patience was in the air and yet the long line of intakes spoke to a long morning of rounds ahead.      Our team was very compassionate and was present to her silence. Slowly her silence became murmurs of disapproval of being committ...

How to turn your breakdown into a break-thru? [A Case Study]

Case Study Title: How to turn your breakdown into a break-0thru? New York Presbyterian Hospital Summer Chronicles From the desk of  Sacred Walker  August 21, 2013 Subtitle: Singing to the emptiness in her soul The Second chance program is where I spent most of my time; these clients have long term stays in the hospital for up to two years, before transitioning to residential housing or permanent state hospitals. The community there is close and spicy, like I like them! During our morning team meetings, K's psychiatrist, social worker, and later another patient tell me K would benefit from having a conversation with me. K is a mousy white woman with blonde hair. She sits in the hallway staring off into her opposite facing room, as if she saw past it and simultaneously saw nothing at all. I approach her with gentleness. "K, my name is Sacred. I am from pastoral care. Can I take a moment to speak with you?" She immediately tells me "I like t...

NYPH Chronicles: A Woman's Hope? [Co-created with an inpatient on her way out]

Image
Story 2: A Woman's Hope? Goddess rising...* * This is written in honor of a special woman on the unit who co-created this with me,  before she was discharged. Blessings on your journey, your seeds help bless others. I lead a group on the women’s unit called “A woman’s hope?” The unit team mentioned to me that a number of women are struggling with suicidal ideation. They are having a hard time with finding their sense of grounded-ness, their sense of hope. I decide to title the group, “A woman’s hope?” in order to create a space that is open and welcoming to feelings of hope and spaces of hopelessness. I bring my Indian gong and we start the group with a silent meditation. We then follow with reading the poem “And still I rise” by Maya Angelou. Literally as the poem is being read, women begin to sob. Lines about "did you want to see me broken. Bowed head and lowered eyes...?" resonate, seen in the eyes of many women. Other lines that resonate are “that I dance like...

Body Map- Chapati Style :D

Image
Location: Parissini, Kerala, South India Intention: Self Love Body Mapping; Group closing Today was the last day of our 3 week series with these dynamic resilient group of predominantly young  women at St. Mary's Special School. Today we played drama therapy body check in games, bringing these beautiful young people back in touch with their voices and bodies. We mixed it up with a game of steal the bacon and I watched introverted types become competitive and in your face spicy:D lol! So glad to be one of the witnesses! After numerous therapeutic and this (and other) team building warm ups we closed with body maps where they were instructed to lie on oak tag paper, each assigned to an adult to (with safe touch and permission) to outline their bodies. After this, the young people they were given markers and crayons to go to town, filling in what their bodies mean to them.  I wondered then, when was the last time someone had talked with them about their bodies...

Young women find light in dark corners (Kerala, India)

Image
Today, I am working with Field Service Learning India in Kerala, India. I am working alongside 18 other volunteers of varying experience with young people, from all over the world. The video below is a brief introduction to some of the young people that 5 of the 19 (including myself) volunteers have been working with. With varying numbers of 12-40 youth-The task is beautiful yet daunting. These young children (and some old in age) are labeled special needs children and mostly are young women who have been orphaned as well. After completing an activity with them today I am brought to tears at the ways both that love, being present, and a hug can teach just as much as team building and drama therapy activities do. I am both honored to work alongside and co-lead this team and to be allowed in the hearts of these sweet and many developmentally challenged young women. Today my moment of joy was when 2 young women began to take over the musical chorus activ...
