The community there is close and spicy, like I like them! During our morning team meetings, K's psychiatrist, social worker, and later another patient tell me K would benefit from having a conversation with me. K is a mousy white woman with blonde hair. She sits in the hallway staring off into her opposite facing room, as if she saw past it and simultaneously saw nothing at all. I approach her with gentleness. "K, my name is Sacred. I am from pastoral care. Can I take a moment to speak with you?" She immediately tells me "I like t...

Story 2: A Woman's Hope? Goddess rising...* * This is written in honor of a special woman on the unit who co-created this with me,  before she was discharged. Blessings on your journey, your seeds help bless others. I lead a group on the women’s unit called “A woman’s hope?” The unit team mentioned to me that a number of women are struggling with suicidal ideation. They are having a hard time with finding their sense of grounded-ness, their sense of hope. I decide to title the group, “A woman’s hope?” in order to create a space that is open and welcoming to feelings of hope and spaces of hopelessness. I bring my Indian gong and we start the group with a silent meditation. We then follow with reading the poem “And still I rise” by Maya Angelou. Literally as the poem is being read, women begin to sob. Lines about "did you want to see me broken. Bowed head and lowered eyes...?" resonate, seen in the eyes of many women. Greetings Dapper Divas attendess, Thank you ALL for coming out and participating in our first Dapper Divas Networking Brunch. Yesterday, Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) and Senator Michael Crapo (R-ID) introduced S. 47, a strong, bipartisan bill that would reauthorize the landmark Violence Against Women Act (VAWA)! This bill closely mirrors the bipartisan legislation introduced by Senators Leahy and Crapo last Congress and would improve VAWA programs and strengthen protections for all victims of violence (see description of legislation below).
